CodeRunner featuresBuild smarter
Get your code to working condition faster than ever. CodeRunner takes code completion, auto-indenting, and bracket management to the next level. Its smart autofill feature not only completes the string but also offers placeholders to write the entire function. Quickly switch between tabs, drag them to order, or hide them when not needed.
Beautify your code
Take noise out of the equation with over 230 syntax highlighters — all updated to the latest language specifications with customizable colors. Select a word or symbol, and then one hotkey later you’re able to view and edit local color scopes. See your current line highlighted and even customize the spacing. Switch between dark and light modes, or select a custom view theme to tie your preferred look together.
Tweak every preference
Configure CodeRunner to work exactly how you want. Don’t like auto-closing of brackets, indenting of new lines, or syntax highlighting? Simply toggle them off in the preference editor. Is auto-complete getting in the way of your custom functions? Switch it off temporarily while you work. You can even turn off auto-save if you’re just experimenting. Make CodeRunner work for you.
Debug like a dream
Produce quality code without compromise by leveraging useful debugging tools. Use the built-in web inspector to debug quickly or inject your JavaScript and CSS with simple run modes. Switch your PHP output between terminal and web mode for easy comparison. Set a breakpoint, explore the call stack, view and edit variables, and step through the code in a snap.
Search docs swiftly
Browse the online documentation for any programming language without leaving the app. CodeRunner’s new information sidebar lets you look up functions, methods, classes, and other symbols instantly. You can even add your own documentation to the lookup source, so that you spend less time switching apps and more time writing beautiful code.
Use any language
CodeRunner speaks your language, so you can drop into your workflow without a hitch. Select from more than 25 supported languages, including AppleScript, C, C++, C#, Go, Haskell, HTML/CSS, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, LaTeX, Lua, Markdown, Node.js, Objective-C/C++, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Rust, Shell Script, Swift, and TypeScript. You can even add your own languages with a simple terminal command.
Very impressed with World Clock Pro @setapp @minimuminc. Making light work of time differences ?yew. How MacOS still doesn't have some kind of digital clock widget is mind boggling.
I have used Endurance (http://enduranceapp.com ) which is on @setapp to try and extend my battery life, 12 hour flight from Vienna to LAX and I spent about 8 hours working on an essay - not bad going!
Wow just downloaded Setapp for my Mac - the value here is amazing. Some of the apps cost more than the monthly subscription alone and there are some amazing apps like Ulysses, RapidWeaver etc. @setapp
Discovered @PDFpen via @Setapp. Worth it just for the stellar OCR job it does on poorly-scanned assigned readings. Now to start playing with all those PDF editing features...
Installation
Launching from the command line
You can also run VS Code from the terminal by typing 'code' after adding it to the path:
Note: If you still have the old
code alias in your .bash_profile (or equivalent) from an early VS Code version, remove it and replace it by executing the Shell Command: Install 'code' command in PATH command.
To manually add VS Code to your path, you can run the following commands:
Start a new terminal to pick up your
.bash_profile changes.
![]()
Note: The leading slash
is required to prevent $PATH from expanding during the concatenation. Remove the leading slash if you want to run the export command directly in a terminal.
Touch Bar support
Out of the box VS Code adds actions to navigate in editor history as well as the full Debug tool bar to control the debugger on your Touch Bar:
Code Runner For Macos FreeMojave privacy protections
After upgrading to macOS Mojave version, you may see dialogs saying 'Visual Studio Code would like to access your {calendar/contacts/photos}.' This is due to the new privacy protections in Mojave and is not specific to VS Code. The same dialogs may be displayed when running other applications as well. The dialog is shown once for each type of personal data and it is fine to choose Don't Allow since VS Code does not need access to those folders. You can read a more detailed explanation in this blog post.
Updates
VS Code ships monthly releases and supports auto-update when a new release is available. If you're prompted by VS Code, accept the newest update and it will get installed (you won't need to do anything else to get the latest bits).

Note: You can disable auto-update if you prefer to update VS Code on your own schedule.
Preferences menu
You can configure VS Code through settings, color themes, and custom keybindings and you will often see mention of the File > Preferences menu group. On a macOS, the Preferences menu group is under Code, not File.
